Text Box: Santa’s Seafood 7’s
The long-awaited return of the finest sevens tournament in the southeast finally arrived on December 6th, 2008. Why have a Seven’s tournament in December you ask? Well, as we all know, rugby backs have very fragile egos. Since the backs will undoubtedly be the cause for most of the anticipated knock-ons, missed tackles, poor rucking, and countless other senseless penalties that even a youth rugby forward would never be foolish enough to commit we know that their sensitive side will be bruised by the constant, um….coaching and positive reinforcement offered by the pack players during the upcoming matrix season. We hope to avoid crying , hissy fits, and bad hair days by allowing them a tournament designed to make the backs look good. The easiest way to accomplish this daunting task was to remove all the forwards, boil down the scrum to a 3 player square dance, and limit the half's to just 7 minutes( Independent laboratory testing has confirmed that if left unsupervised for more than 8 minutes, the backs would stop playing the game, share their feelings with the opposing side, and brushing each others hair). More reports from the tournament to follow.
Savannah Match
Ross stepped up and prepared the team for an impromptu match against Savannah, as they were not originally on our schedule this past Saturday. The Hammerheads inched out a much needed win over Savannah 26-24 this Saturday. The match ended up being a true testament to the old adage “forwards win matches, backs decide by how much”. With Savannah only traveling with 10 players and all of them being mousse and hairspray loving backs, the Hammerheads donated some much needed muscle to the flower girls, er... Shamrocks. All who turned out saw a nasty slug-fest of the usual hard hits, rugged rucks, and tough tackles that the Hammerhead fans and opposing teams have come to learn is the forward –dominated style of play that the Hammerheads bring to the pitch. Every hit proved to be bittersweet for all involved as both packs were comprised of GIRFC ruggers. The backs showed impressive skill in moving the ball out and stepping up the defensive skills. Both sets of backs made sure that the forwards would be plenty wore out for the social by allowing as many scrums as possible. At one point in time I thought that the Laws had changed and moving downfield was no longer allowed without a scrum immediately preceding it. All in all it was a great match enjoyed by all. The Hammerhead Man of the Match mug was presented to Pastor Paul for his unyielding crashes and numerous bone-crunching tackles.
Team Leadership
Thursday we voted in our Fall Leadership. Congratulations to our new Captain George and Co-Captain Ross.
Intersquad Match
Saturday, we divided into Gold vs. Green   ,11 a side, and played two twenty minute sessions. 40 minutes total..  Gold came out ahead with a 33 to 5 score. After the first 20 minutes it was Green 5 and Gold 0, Green started off strong and dominated the first half. On the green Dante scored. And on the Gold, guys you may need to help me out as I forgot but I think ,Jp, Sam, Nik, Gil (zulu) all scored and point after made by JP 6 pts , Nik 2pts . Gold used their speed more in the second half and wore down the Green side. Over all lots of good rugby was enjoyed by all.
Gratis 7’s
Wow, talk about an exciting weekend! GIRFC (with the help of Valdosta RFC) fielded 2 sides for the tournament. With the Hammers being Captained by Ross and the Heads by Rhett. The Heads were effectively a B-side team full of Props, Drunks, Rookies, and all the other riff-raff deemed unworthy for 7s play by the Hammers. After the first Head match it was found that one of the Heads actually had speed and talent and was quickly drafted into the Hammer squad. The Heads went out and put on a good performance, despite their best efforts we ended up somewhere near the bottom of the finals bracket.
We were escorted by 2 of our new Women’s side members, Sarah and Courtney who both did an excellent job impressing all who watched in disbelief that they could be THAT good after 3 weeks of practice. Courtney earned 2 tries in her first match and Sarah finished out the day with an impressive breakaway run earning a try for herself. The Tournament directors were so Impressed that they awarded Sarah the Women’s MVP of the tournament!
Our Hammer squad despite being genetically challenged and with questionable parental lineage performed very well. They ran the day undefeated until the championship match against Division II Charleston RFC earning 2nd place. Colin from Valdosta earned Men’s MVP of the tournament. Look for a complete write up on the tournament in the near future.

We have had a few women come out to practice that are interested in starting a Hammerhead Women’s side. If you, or someone else you know, are interested please come out to our regular practice.

Charleston 7’s Tournament May 24th
The team traveled to Charleston, SC for the Memorial Day 7s tournament. Despite traveling with only 8 players, the team played very well. By the end of the day the team had found some of it's rhythm and ended the last match with a painful sudden death overtime loss. Thanks to John Carillo for leading the team as the captain. Also attending were Skarp, Rhett, Michael, Tim (Valdosta), Steele, Jody, and Jake.
